Neale-May, 60, is the founder and executive director of the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Council (www.cmocouncil.org), a global affinity network of more than 6,500 senior marketing and branding executives, who collectively control more than $350 billion in annual marketing spend. Neale-May is also the founder and executive director of the Business Performance Innovation (BPI) Network (www.bpinetwork.org), a global management community dedicated to identifying, exploring and sharing emerging trends and transformational ideas and practices that are reshaping world markets and competitive landscapes.

Neale-May serves as president and managing partner of GlobalFluency, Inc., the leader in Intelligent Market Engagement™, with 70 offices in over 40 countries. He serves on the board of directors for Travelzoo (NASDAQ: TZOO) and is a member of the Rhodes University Board of Governors in South Africa. He is also an adjunct professor at Seoul National University in South Korea.

Stephen Bell Stephen J.D. Bell

Stephen Bell is currently Trustee (Fiduciary), Monitor and Advisor overseeing the execution of the anti-trust order arising from the $68 billion Pfizer acquisition of Wyeth in 2009. In this capacity, he represents the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the Canadian Bureau of Competition, the European Commission, the South African Competition Commission and the Ministry of Commerce in China.

Before assuming the Trustee appointment in 2009, Bell was Project Director and Principal Investigator for a $300 million U.S. Health & Human Services award to Solvay Pharmaceuticals. He has also held various senior-level and executive appointments worldwide, having previously worked for leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies including Boehringer Mannheim in South Africa, Roche Pharmaceuticals in Switzerland, Biotech Australia, The Upjohn Company (Pfizer) USA, Boehringer Ingelheim USA, BioSante Pharmaceuticals USA and Solvay Pharmaceuticals USA.

Bell is an accomplished entrepreneur, having formed a startup company and built it up for 10 years, taking it from invention and patenting of the lead technology all the way through R&D, business development, clinical development, out-licensing, IPO and finally partnering. Additionally, while serving in various consulting roles over the preceding 25 years, he has collaborated with and added significant value to a number of other small and mid-sized companies.

In the biotechnology and pharmaceutical fields, Bell has wide-ranging business experience, including M&A, post-merger integration, licensing, intellectual property, business strategy and development, financing, research, product development, clinical development, regulatory affairs and compliance, manufacturing and commercial operations across a wide range of specialty areas. These include vaccines, biologicals, molecular biology, stem cells, cell therapy, infectious diseases, diagnostics, cancer, allergy, autoimmune disease, endocrinology, neurology, cardiology, aesthetic medicine, medical devices and medical instrumentation.

Bell earned his bachelor's degree from Rhodes University before pursuing a graduate degree in clinical science and immunology from the University of Cape Town Medical School. Bell then received a Swiss National Research Foundation award to undertake allergy studies at the University of Bern. Subsequently, he received a PhD in medicine from the University of New South Wales in Australia. Additionally, he holds a MBA (Beta Gamma Sigma honor inductee) from the Kennesaw State University Michael J. Coles College of Business in Georgia.

Trevor HastieTrevor Hastie
Professor and Chairman
Statistics Department,
Stanford University, California


Hastie is an applied statistician, and has coauthored three major books and over 100 research papers in this area. His research focuses on bioinformatics, genomics and data-mining. The most recent book, “Elements of Statistical Learning” (Springer, 2001), is a best-seller and has become an industry standard in data mining. Hastie received his B.Sc (hons) from Rhodes in 1976, and was awarded the Foundation and National scholarships. After working in medical research in South Africa and the UK for 4 years, he earned his Ph.D in Statistics from Stanford University in 1984. He then spent 9 years in the data-analysis research group at AT&T Bell laboratories, where he was a co-developer of the increasingly popular S language for data analysis used by the Splus/R communities. In 1994 he joined the statistics faculty at Stanford University, where he teaches and advises graduate students. He serves on the scientific advisory boards of eight Silicon Valley hi-tech startups.

Tanya AcconeTanya Accone

A strategic planning specialist, Accone is chief of strategic human resource planning for the United Nations Children's Fund's (UNICEF.) Her career has spanned multiple continents, including the development of Internet businesses and successful websites throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, working for the Washington Post, and being the Internet Editor of southern Africa’s largest newspaper. Accone has a Journalism degree from Rhodes University, completed her MA in Public Communication at American University on a Fulbright Scholarship, and holds an MS in Studies of the Future, long-range strategic planning, from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She has served as a Trustee to The Rhodes University Trust (USA) since 2003.

Ian is formerly the Executive Vice President, General Manager of McCann Erickson Los Angeles, a leading advertising and communications agency. He graduated from Rhodes in 1969 and attributes much of his success to the outstanding education - academic, social and sporting, that he was privileged to receive in Grahamstown. Following graduation Ian was hired into the Unilever S.A. Management development program in Durban and in 1973 he joined Lintas Advertising, an IPG Company. He was transferred to the United States in 1980 where he has held senior management positions with several IPG companies. His clients have included leading blue chip companies Johnson and Johnson, Lever Bros, Nestle, Northrop Grumman. In addition to numerous industry awards he is particularly proud of the marketing successes he has been associated with such as the introductions of J&J’s Acuvue, the DirecTV satellite service and Tivo. Ian returned to South Africa on assignment from 1990 -92 as Chairman of Lintas South Africa and Regional Director for Southern Africa. Ian is currently chair of the AAAA’s Western Region Board of Governors, and is President of the Board of Governors of the Fulfillment Fund, an award winning Los Angeles charity that provides mentoring and college access programs to under privileged students. Ian is Zimbabwean by birth and married to Elizabeth who is the Associate Head of a K-12 Los Angeles private school. Ian has a daughter Kaarin who lives in Plettenberg Bay and he and Elizabeth have two children Lindsay, who recently graduated from Princeton, and James who is a senior at Boston College.

Tanya AcconeDesmond Low-Kum

Desmond Low-Kum is Senior Manager of Operational Risk Management and Compliance at Stanford Management Company (SMC), which was established to manage Stanford University's financial and investment real estate assets. Desmond is responsible for planning, managing and conducting the operational risk management/due diligence reviews for both pre investment and post (ongoing) investments. He has over 25 years of experience working in private industry, public accounting, internal auditing and operational investment management. Currently serves as the backup to the SMC Business Resumption Planning (BRP) Manager. In addition, during the course of conducting operational risk management reviews of managers, Desmond reviews many BRP plans developed and implemented by the managers. Prior to joining SMC, Desmond spent 16 years working at the University's Internal Audit and Institutional Compliance Department with responsibility for managing audits in a number of diverse areas such as SMC (Investment Management), DAPER (Stanford Athletics), SLAC (High Energy Physics Laboratory) and the University Controller's Office. He joined the University's Internal Audit Department in November 1989, after working in internal audit in the S&L and mortgage banking industry in San Francisco, and public accounting (KPMG in Johannesburg, South Africa). Desmond qualified as a Chartered Accountant, a Certified Investments and Derivatives Auditor, an Associate of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants, and a Certified Information Systems Auditor. Desmond has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Rhodes University, South Africa, and a Bachelor of Accounting Science (Honors) from the University of South Africa. Desmond is a past president (1998-1999) of the Silicon Valley Chapter of the Information Systems Audit and Control. He has been a member of the Stanford Federal Credit Union supervisory committee (audit committee) since 1997.

Guy WhiteSt. Claire Adriaan

Prior to co-founding Success Preparatory Academy, St. Claire Adriaan, has had a seventeen-year career in education. Growing up under the apartheid regime in South Africa, St. Claire attended the Dower College of Education where he received his diploma in elementary education. He then enrolled at The University of Port Elizabeth where he obtained his Bachelors of Arts in Secondary Education. He also holds two post graduate degrees from the University of Port Elizabeth, a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Biblical and Religious Studies and Bachelor of Education. He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma from Rhodes University in Educational Leadership and Management. St. Claire trained teachers at Kagisanong College of Education in South Africa before coming to the United States in 1999. He was also Adjunct Professor in the School of Education at Dominican University, River Forest. St. Claire came to the United States in 1999 through the Visiting International Faculty and began teaching in North Carolina. Then he moved to Chicago to teach at Noble Street Charter School, one of the nation’s highest performing high schools. He then moved to San Diego to teach at Kipp Adelante, where for two consecutive years (2005-06, 2006-07) his English Language Learner students were the highest scoring in math the entire San Diego County and in 2007 they were the highest scoring in the State of California. St. Claire also presents workshops for math teachers throughout the country. After his work at KIPP, he moved to Cleveland to become the founding principal of Villaview Lighthouse Community School, where after just five months the school had the highest gains in math and second highest in reading on the Northwestern Evaluation Association (NWEA). During his teaching career in the United States he has been recognized for his tremendous achievements: Disney Teacher Award Honoree – 2006, San Diego CW5 Dream Classroom winner- 2006, University of Kentucky, Teacher who made a difference – 2006 and 2007, North Carolina Wal-Mart teacher of the year (Fayetteville)-2002, VIF Cultural Educator of the year -2002. St. Claire’s biography has also been included in Marquis Who’s Who In America for 2 years in a row. He has commendations for exemplary teaching from the Mayor of San Diego, United States Congress, and the United States Senate.

Guy WhiteAdriane Parsons
Attorney

Adriane attended Rhodes from 1987 to 1991 and graduated with a BA LLB. She is licensed to practice law in South Africa, California, Colorado and Arizona. After completing her articles in Cape Town, she worked as in-house council to the Cape Town City Council during South Africa’s transition to democracy. After completing an LL.M in constitutional law at Wits in 1998, she moved with her husband to the United States. She was appointed a Deputy District Attorney in Colorado, where she practiced as an appellate attorney and prosecutor in District Court. She now lives in Arizona, where she is in private practice with Munger Chadwick PLC, focusing on business law, civil litigation and business immigration. She is married to David Parsons, a Zimbabwean and Old Andrean, and has two children, Finlay and Lucy. They live in Tucson, Arizona.

Guy WhiteDr. Iain S. Maclean
Associate Professor of Western Religious Thought
James Madison University

Dr Maclean, a graduate of the Universities of Cape Town, Rhodes, South Africa, Princeton and Harvard, is Professor of Western Religious Thought, Director of the Pre-Seminary Program, and advisor for those wishing to pursue Graduate Studies in Religion. He also serves as a freshman advisor, as a religion advisor, and as the Faculty representative for TAK, the National Honor Society for Theology and/or Religious Studies. Dr. Maclean has received numerous awards for teaching, and has been a Danforth Writing Fellow for undergraduate teaching at Harvard University. He has also been the recipient of a Rotary Scholarship, the Dean's Dissertation Fellowship at Harvard Divinity School, a Course Development Grant, and the Edna T. Schaeffer Summer Research Award at James Madison University. In addition, he was nominated by the Philosophy and Religion Department, and subsequently named as the College of Arts and Letters' Madison Scholar for 2005-2006. He presented the public Madison Scholar Lecture on "Forgiveness in Politics? The Challenge of Truth and Reconciliation Commissions" on Tuesday, 20th September, 2005 at the Anthony -Seeger Auditorium. He also serves as a consultant for the Consultation on the Vocation of the Presbyterian Teacher of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and contributed a chapter on the vocation of teaching for Duncan S. Ferguson's Called to Teach (2003). He serves on numerous scholarly and university committees, including the Steering Committee of the Religion in Latin America and Caribbean Group and the Steering Committee of Dutch Theology, of the American Academy of Religion. He serves at James Madison University on the General Education Committee, as well as those for Africana Studies, Latin American Studies and for the Classical Minor. As part of the celebration of the anniversary of James Madison's 250th birthday (16th March, 2001), he organized a series of lectures by renowned historians, constitutional scholars, and theologians around the issue of "Religion, the Constitution and James Madison: The Past and Future of Issues of Church and State." He is also web master of the "Calvinbarth" web discussion list and its companion web page which features links to numerous sites dealing with Karl Barth, John Calvin and Reformed theology in general.

Guy WhiteGerry Son Kee

Based in Toronto, Son Kee is a Financial Advisor with Raymond James, providing investment management and customized investment solutions for a diversified range of clients. He also works with business owners and consultants to maximize their "after-tax" returns on cash and investments. Son Kee graduated with a B.Comm from Rhodes University in 1973 and emigrated to Toronto in 1990 after holding a variety of professional accounting positions in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has been in the Financial Planning and retail brokerage industry for the past 17 years and has, since 2003 run his own independent brokerage practice in Mississauga. Gerry keeps in close touch with the SA Chinese Rhodes alumni in Toronto. Son Kee has taken the lead in organizing Rhodes alumni gatherings in Canada. Son Kee attributes much of his success as a Financial Advisor to being a "people's" person and a community man at heart. He is a past director of the Canada South Africa Chamber of Business based in Toronto, and a Charter member of the Knights of Columbus chapter at his local church. Son Kee is married to Eunice, formerly of Johannesburg and has two adult daughters, Lynn who is an Electrical Engineer and Brenda who is a budding Physiotherapist. His interests include family, golf, ballroom dancing, travel, reading, church and charity.

Doreen Motsi is a Senior Client Operations Accountant at Mosaic Sales Solutions corporate office in Dallas, TX. Mosaic is a field sales and marketing company with operations in US & Canada. Doreen received a Bachelor of Commerce major in Accounting & Commercial Law at Rhodes University in 1998. Prior to joining Mosaic, she was Senior Associate for eight years at Greyhound Lines, Inc a billion dollar intercity passenger bus in North America. After her Rhodes graduation, she served a year of internship at KPMG Zimbabwe. Doreen moved to Dallas, TX in late 1999 & and is married to an Attorney, Lawrence Bosompem from Ghana. They are blessed with two children - Harold and Charles.

Guy WhiteSherwin Bryce-Pease

Sherwin Bryce-Pease, 33, is a graduate of Rhodes University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies. He began his working career in marketing, as Rhodes University’s International Communications Liaison based in the United States. While there, he completed a comprehensive internship with GlobalFluency/Neale-May & Partners working in the global marketing and strategic communications agency’s New York and Palo Alto offices. After his return to South Africa in 2002, he took up a position in News with the SABC. He has been with the organization ever since – starting with Newsbreak in the Special News Services Division followed by a stint as Bulletin Writer and News Presenter on SAFM, the national English radio broadcaster. In 2005, Sherwin was appointed Insert Producer and Co-Anchor of SABC News’ Weekend Breakfast Show – Weekend Live. During the same period he was also the stand-in presenter on SABC 2’s Morning Live – the largest breakfast television show in South Africa. In March, 2008 Sherwin was appointed SABC U.S. Correspondent, based at the United Nations in New York. He covers the North American region for the broadcasting company. His interests include the arts, current affairs, reading and a variety of sports that include rugby (Blue Bulls fan), cricket, F1 auto racing, tennis and golf. He is an eloquent and entertaining public speaker. Highlights during his career include interviewing U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, South African Presidents Jacob Zuma, Kgalema Motlanthe and Thabo Mbeki, Chile's former President Michelle Bachelete, actor Morgan Freeman and Nobel laureates Nadine Gordimer and Shirin Ebadi among others.

Based in Oakville, Ontario, Sonya Kopecky-Duff is a Key Account Manager with SL Canada, GP, and is actively engaged in providing asset-backed financing for manufacturing equipment, typically high quality German manufactured equipment exported to Canada. SL Canada is a member of the LBBW group, Landesbank, Baden-Wuerttemberg, an international commercial bank, which includes operations in the NAFTA region:  USA, Mexico, and since March 2009, Mississauga, Canada.

Sonya was born in the Czech Republic and emigrated with her family in the summer of 1968, to South Africa. Sonya graduated with a B.A.,( Psychology and Industrial Sociology) from Rhodes University in 1981, and emigrated to Canada immediately thereafter, reuniting with her family, who had settled in Toronto in 1979. Sonya has been in the credit granting and leasing industry for the last 20 years, spending the last decade with the sales and support unit of a German manufacturer of offset printing presses, Heidelberg Canada.

In the late 1990’s Sonya was actively involved for several years, first serving as the Secretary and then as the President of the Board, with a community project, Harmony Co-operative Homes, located on Princess Street in downtown Toronto. The project, funded by the conservative government, is a joint endeavor between Government, together with the Czech Community and a church based group, Family Action Network. The two tower apartment complex with Playground, provides affordable downtown housing, and has a designated 25% allocation of rental units to house families coming out of battered woman’s shelters.

Sonya married a first generation Canadian in 2000, and currently lives with her husband Steve, and their two school-age children Trinity and Nolan, in Oakville, Ontario.

Guy WhiteGuy White
Director of Rhodes’ Communications and Development Division
Rhodes University

White is Director of Rhodes’ Communications and Development Division. His team is based in the new Alumni House building and their responsibilities include looking after the University’s priority fundraising programmes, developing and fostering its relationships with the alumni body as well as looking after various internal and external communications initiatives. White comes from a business background having spent 14 years in the downstream oil industry serving in several senior executive positions including as Managing Director of Mobil/Engen Botswana. An entrepreneur at heart he left Engen to try his hand in the small business world and he and his wife Jill are co-owners of a number of businesses in Grahamstown. He now has over six years service to the University – the first three of which were as fundraising consultant during the highly successful Rhodes Centenary Campaign which, at its conclusion in 2004, had raised over R150 million for the University. He was recruited to the full-time staff in his present position in 2004 and serves on the University’s senior management team. Whilst he has little spare time, he describes himself as an ‘adequate golfer and a sometimes runner’. His daughter Michelle graduated with a BA LLB from Rhodes in 2006 and is currently serving her articles whilst his eldest son Mark is finishing off his BA, also at Rhodes. He has a second son who will be going to St Andrews College in 2008. He says the best thing about his job is the opportunities it gives him to meet and interact with interesting and important people from all walks of life as well as to find innovative ways in which to get them to support the University. The worst part is the never-ending meetings he has to attend on campus!

Guy WhiteBryony Winn
Management Consultant, McKinsey & Co.

Bryony is currently a management consultant with McKinsey & Co. She joined McKinsey in 2009 in London and has recently moved to the Chicago Office. Bryony’s work focuses predominantly on the healthcare industry, and she has worked with Ministries of Health, payers or providers across Europe, Africa and now the USA.

Bryony is a Zimbabwean who attended Rhodes from 2003 until 2008 where she triple majored in English, Philosophy and Psychology before completing an MA in English Literature on a Mandela Rhodes Scholarship. While at Rhodes, Bryony was sub-warden of Oriel House (2004, 2005) and SRC President (2007). After Rhodes, Bryony completed an MPhil in International Development on a Rhodes Scholarship at St. Antony’s College, Oxford.

She is married to David Winn, whom she met in her first year at Rhodes.
